Heather's Guide to New York City Mosaics - November 2005

Subways - The New York City Subways are being flooded with mosaics. As a mosaic artists I am thrilled by this and have decided to post images and locations of the mosaics I have found as I travel around town so that others can enjoy them too!

Currently I am going to post images and locations as I take pictures but eventually I hope to have a "viewing route" and directions to the actual mosaics in the stations so that they are easier and take less time to find. See my Icon Key for more details.

Keep in mind also that I am not a professional photographer with professional equipment. These photos are only to give you an idea of what's there- to see these mosaics in their full glory you must see them in person! Thank you to the people who have offered their images of the NYC Subway mosaics for me to include in this guide!

N, R, W, 4, 5 Train Exchange - Lexington Avenue

Chamber Street
I can't remember which train station this is. It is either the A C E or the 1 train. More info coming soon.

2 & 3 Train Platform - 34th Street
More Info: This mosaic is above one of the stairways to the 2 & 3 Uptown train platform.

C & E Train - 81st Street
These are some of the most famous subway mosaics. They are all over the station, before the turnstiles as well as on the platform AND in all the stairwells to the lower level downtown trains. Some of the mosaics outline continues into the granite tile on the platform (see croc below). Don't miss the underwater mosaic in the southern most stairwell to the downtown trains(last image). There are also mosaics just outside the stairs on the walls on the lower lever platform. Here you will also find neat (bonded?) bronze reproductions of fossil dino bones on the walls. I guess you could call them tiles. These images are courtesy of Maiden Studio.

1 Train Platform - Hosuton St
Beautiful mosaics on both sides of the train platform. The theme is underwater subway scenes of aquatic life.

A, C, E, Train Exchange - 34th Street
There are large mosaics in the uptown / downtown exchange are of these trains. They have a circus theme with animals etc.

1, A, C, E, S Train Exchange - 42nd Street
There are many mosaics, and more planned, in the exchange area of these trains. One I know is a mosaic of a Jack Beal painting.

1 Train Platform- 50th Street
Fun Alice in Wonderland inspired mosaics, these look sort of like the shadows of the characters.

Beautiful robed figures with gold smalti on this platform.

1 Train stairwell - 191th Street
This is a large mosaic in the upstown stairwell. I think it is ceramic. I haven't actually inspected it yet.

C & E Train stairwell - Spring Street
This mosaic is on the first landing of the stairwell on 6th and Spring.

	Mosaic located on the Platform where you wait for the trains.
	Mosaic located on the UPTOWN side of the train platform.
	Mosaic located on the DOWNTOWN side of the platform.
	Mosaic located on both UPTOWN and DOWNTOWN side of the platform.
	Mosaic located after the turnstiles. You can see some of it from before the turnstiles but the view is partial obstructed.
	Mosaic located before the turnstiles.
